WASHINGTON – Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., made the following statement regarding the removal of the MEK from the list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations:
“Secretary Clinton’s determination regarding the status of the MEK was overdue and appropriate. According to the State Department, the Secretary’s decision is based in part on the MEK’s cooperation in the closure of Camp Ashraf in Iraq and the re-location of the Ashraf residents to Camp Liberty outside Baghdad. Now, the MEK’s designation by the United States as a Foreign Terrorist Organization will no longer be an obstacle to the resettlement of the former residents of Camp Ashraf, and hopefully countries will act swiftly to open their doors to them so they can be promptly resettled safely outside of Iraq.”
